A Children of Holocaust Survivors event at a local temple helped me create this memoir. I had never been to a group like this before, although my mother and her family were Holocaust survivors, a factor that had and continues to affect me deeply. The event overwhelmed me, crowding my consciousness with previously blocked out memories and intense emotions, much like how I felt over the years, each time I had tried to start our family’s memoir. But this time was different. Hearing so many similar stories, shared with trust and even intimacy, created clarity, community, and movement. What follows is a beginning.
